The president of the Foreign Relations Committee of the United States Senate, Jim Risch, announced that he will present a bill aimed at strengthening Washington’s response to an eventual Chinese offensive against Taiwan. The Republican by Idaho said that the initiative, called Deter PRC Aggression Against Taiwan Actseeks to establish an inter -institutional working group that identifies China‘s economic and military objectives in advance to apply immediate sanctions in case of aggression. The news was released this October 3 by Reuters.

As Risch explained, the proposal contemplates that the State and Treasury departments lead a preventive strategy that includes financial sanctions, export controls and other restrictive measures. The senator stressed that the project collects the lessons learned from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where the coordination of international sanctions took effect in effectively. “With this legislation we make sure that the United States is prepared to hit China where it hurts most if it meets its threats to use force against Taiwan,” he said in a statement.

The presentation of the project is scheduled for Monday, in a context marked by the imminent meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese pair Xi Jinping. Washington and Beijing currently negotiate a large -scope commercial agreement, which increases the political and diplomatic sensitivity of any initiative linked to Taiwan. Analysts point out that Beijing will seek that the White House express an explicit rejection of Taiwanese independence, something that the Biden administration avoided with a more ambiguous language.

China claims the island as part of its territory and has not resigned from the use of force to unify it under its control. In recent years, Beijing intensified military and diplomatic pressure on Taipéi, with naval and aerial exercises around the Strait, as well as political campaigns to isolate it from the international community. The situation generates restlessness in Washington and among regional allies, which perceive a sustained increase in the risk of conflict.

The United States is the main international partner of Taiwan and its key armament provider. However, doubts persist about Trump’s position against the defense of the island, compared to previous administrations. Some experts and political sectors in Taipéi fear that the president may be willing to grant concessions to China to ensure a high -economic commercial agreement.

The State Department reiterated in the last hours that the Washington position has not changed and that it opposes any unilateral modification of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, either by Beijing or Taipéi. The Risch project joins other ongoing initiatives within the US Congress that reflect a legislative consensus in favor of maintaining a hard line against possible movements of China against Taiwan, underlining the centrality of the issue on the strategic agenda of the United States in Asia-Pacific.
