Confirmation of application submission and approval is delivered via email, so checking your inbox before departure is crucial.

Understanding the ETA Application Process

The most efficient way to apply for the UK ETA is through the official mobile application. The fee for the ETA is currently around twelve euros, but is expected to rise to almost 20 euros from April 9th. Travelers attempting to enter the UK without a valid ETA risk being denied boarding by airlines or refused entry at passport control. This measure aims to streamline border security and manage the flow of visitors.

As of 2024, the UK saw approximately 40.8 million inbound visits, highlighting the importance of a smooth and efficient entry process. the ETA system is designed to contribute to this efficiency.

Airline Preparedness and Passenger Awareness

Major airlines, including the Lufthansa Group (wich includes Austrian Airlines), have implemented system-wide checks during the check-in process to verify ETA status. Document control measures are also in place before boarding. Airlines have been proactively informing passengers about the ETA requirement through various channels, including email and online check-in systems.

A Lufthansa spokesperson stated, We expect the passengers to be well in the picture, emphasizing the airline’s efforts to ensure travelers are aware of the new regulations. Other airlines, such as Easyjet, have also communicated the ETA obligation to their passengers. Ultimately, however, border authorities retain the final say on entry.

Applying for the ETA via Mobile App

The “UK ETA” app requires applicants (aged nine and above) to upload a photograph of their passport and a facial photograph. Additionally, applicants must answer several questions. The introduction of the ETA is expected to generate significant revenue for the UK government.

Beware of Fraudulent ETA Providers

The Foreign Ministry has issued warnings regarding fraudulent ETA providers and fake websites that mimic the official UK government website.Travelers are strongly advised to use only the official GOV.UK website for their applications. Please use only the page provided by the British government (GOV.UK) for application, the Ministry advises.

Processing Times and Validity

While the automated processing system typically provides quick confirmation, the UK government advises allowing up to three working days for ETA processing. Once approved, the ETA permits multiple trips and stays of up to six months within a two-year period. This also includes the possibility of short-term study (up to six months).

Exemptions from the ETA Requirement

The ETA is not required for individuals holding valid UK visas, residence permits, or those with existing post-Brexit stay arrangements.
