In a recent interview, geopolitics expert Professor Alexander Görlach
discussed the shifting dynamics of the Ukraine war, the rise of China, and
the implications of US foreign policy under Donald Trump. Görlach,who
teaches at New York University,spoke about Ukrainian President Wolodymyr
Selenskyj’s visit to Berlin and the evolving German approach to the
conflict.

When asked about the realignment of German Ukraine policy,Professor
Görlach noted that Chancellor Friedrich Merz is adopting a notably
different stance on Russia’s aggression compared to his predecessor,olaf
Scholz.The decision to remove range limitations on German weapons systems
marks a significant shift.

“Chancellor Friedrich Merz strikes a different tone when it comes to
Russia’s war of aggression against ukraine than his predecessor Olaf
Scholz,” Görlach stated. “The announcement of exposing the range
limitation for German weapons systems is new in its clarity.”

Görlach also addressed potential disagreements within the German government
regarding Ukraine policy, suggesting that while the coalition may not be
entirely split, some differences persist regarding the implications of
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s statements. He emphasized the importance of
the government presenting a united front to both Ukraine and the German
public.

Europe’s United Front Against Putin

“Every offer of conversation has now been seen by the kremlin dictator
Vladimir putin as an admission of weakness.”

Professor Görlach highlighted the increasing unity among European nations
in supporting Ukraine, with Great Britain, France, and Germany working
together.He stressed the importance of Europe taking the lead, given the
uncertainty surrounding future US support under Donald Trump. The decision
to lift range limitations on weapon systems is a crucial step, as Vladimir
Putin has consistently interpreted any sign of hesitation as a weakness.

Regarding Donald Trump’s strategy in the Ukraine war, Görlach noted the
US President’s seemingly unclear approach. Despite labeling Vladimir
Putin as “crazy” on social media following the escalation of the conflict,
Donald Trump has not yet supported new sanctions against Russia. While the
US has matched European partners in lifting range limitations on weapons
deliveries to Ukraine, a cohesive strategy remains elusive.

“So it truly seems that it slowly but surely dawns the US president that he was
led by Putin on a leash through the ring,” Görlach observed.

Professor Görlach concluded that Ukraine and European nations cannot rely
solely on the United States for sustained support in their alliance.
