A consumer research firm claims that plummeting Tesla sales in New Zealand are not primarily due to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial views. Instead, the decline is attributed to domestic political shifts, advancements in new technologies, and even traditional consumer preferences like colour choices.

Elon Musk’s Influence on Tesla’s Image

An Australian analyst cited a significant Tesla sales dip in Australia and around the world, attributed to Musk’s provocative actions.

His actions, which included antisemitic tweets, contentious gestures, and aligning with President Donald Trump, might have stirred controversy.

However, Bruce Pitchers, editorial manager at Canstar New Zealand, provides a nuanced perspective, noting, “Tesla’s most popular car, the Model Y, saw an 80 percent drop in sales last year.” Yet he elaborates, “Tesla’s sales were down before any of his controversial statements, so I wonder if that’s going to deter people from buying a car?”

Electrifying Controversy

Despite Musk’s polarizing reputation, Tesla maintains its position as the most popular electric vehicle (EV) brand in New Zealand. Negative publicity continues, as evidenced by a defaced Tesla sign in Wellington with graffiti reading, “F— off fascist,” gaining over 37,000 Instagram likes.

Political Shifts and Market Impacts

Pitchers refers to political factors shaping consumer decisions. In New Zealand, the coalition government ended the clean car discount and introduced road user charges, potentially affecting electric vehicle adoption.

Furthermore, Pitchers attributes Europe’s green concerns with EV purchases and China’s entry into the market with subsidised vehicles.

Technological Considerations

Technological advancements like hybrid cars pose a challenge to the dominance of EVs, providing similar fuel savings.

Surprisingly, Pitchers believes that Tesla buyers aren’t overly influenced by Musk’s share price or his personal wealth. Instead, they prioritise features like connectivity and vehicle aesthetics.

“It isn’t about Elon Musk personally for most consumers,” he adds, “but rather the car’s performance and styling.”

Consumer Demands Shift

The EV sector is witnessing a rapid transformation driven by evolving consumer preferences. Pitchers points out that while Tesla’sModel Y experienced a steep decline, overall EV sales across different makes and models in New Zealand declined.

This suggests a broader market trend rather than a phenomenon unique to Tesla.

Conclusion: A changing Landscape

While Elon Musk’s controversial actions attract headlines, they only present one aspect of Tesla’s sales challenges.

EV sales are influenced by political, economic, and technological factors, reflecting broader industry dynamics.

Ultimately, Tesla will need to address these issues to regain market share in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle sector.
