Almoloya de Juárez, Méx. A control judge assigned to the justice center of the Altiplano federal prison, decreed this Friday the justified preventive detention against Diego Rivera Navarro, mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, who was arrested yesterday by federal forces, for being involved with organized crime groups.
This Friday the hearing for charges was held where the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) accused him of the crimes of organized crime and aggravated kidnapping, since the mayor had ordered the deprivation of liberty of a Morena candidate and his substitute, so that they would renounce the nomination and thus, the party could grant the candidacy to a person related to its interests.
The former mayor of Tequila will remain in justified preventive detention while his legal situation is resolved, which if he is linked to a trial would continue until his trial ends.
Ministerial sources announced that in the statement of consignment he is identified as responsible for having plagiarized on March 24, 2021 at the La Posta restaurant in the municipality of Tequila, the then pre-candidates of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) Guillermo Cordero García and Julio Alejandro García Gutiérrez, and forced them to renounce their aspirations.
Along with Diego Rivera, Juan Manuel Pérez Sosa, director of Public Security of Tequila, and Juan Gabriel Toribio Villareal, director of the municipality’s cadastre, were also charged with organized crime.
According to the file, the three defendants planned to rob the victims in order to force them to resign and thus be able to promote Juan Gabriel Toribio, who would guarantee loyalty to Diego Rivera and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, with whom they had a close relationship.
Once the victims were lifted, they were forced to sign their resignation from the candidacy, a fact that was witnessed by a Jalisco notary, who worked under the orders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The crime of aggravated kidnapping was only charged to Diego Rivera and Juan Manuel Pérez Sosa, as they had ordered the kidnapping of a couple of Tequila merchants, after refusing to pay extortion to continue selling their products.
During the hearing, Diego Rivera reserved his right to testify, and his team of lawyers requested the duplication of the constitutional term so that his legal situation could be resolved. For this reason, it will be until next Tuesday when it will be decided whether Mayor Tequila and co-defendants are linked to criminal proceedings.
