A biology and geography teacher in Duisburg, Germany, began a leave of absence in August 2009, citing chronic illness and psychological issues, according to reports from Bild. While a medical examination was required after three months, it never occurred.

As a result, the teacher’s sick leave was continuously extended because no medical evaluation was conducted. School administrators reportedly failed to notice the lapse and continued to pay the teacher’s salary. These payments ranged from 5,000 to 6,100 euros monthly, based on the German salary scale.

The payments persisted until last year, when a new interpretation prompted an internal investigation and a demand for the teacher to undergo a medical examination. The teacher refused and subsequently sued the managers, but the inspection will proceed.

Shoudl Teacher Repay Salary?

the teacher refused and subsequently sued the managers, but the inspection will proceed.

Even with the impending examination, it remains uncertain whether the teacher will be required to reimburse the received salary. Proving that she misrepresented her health throughout those years would be challenging. Though, suspicions have arisen due to allegations that she worked as a naturopath during her leave.

in addition to the alleged employment, the teacher, who has been employed by the school since 2003, reportedly owns two apartments in Duisburg.
