The Swiss parliament today rejected joining the working group on Russian elites, proxies and oligarchs (REPO). 80 lawmakers voted in favor of joining, while 101 voted against.
The Swiss government also does not want to join this group proposed by the Greens. Switzerland’s conservative parties believe that accession would be incompatible with Switzerland’s traditional neutrality in foreign policy matters.
Switzerland offers its services as a link between countries that do not have diplomatic relations, such as between Iran and the United States. Involvement in REPO could make it more difficult to provide such services, Free Democrats (FDP) MP Hans Peter Portmann said. “We don’t want to get politically involved in this structure,” he added.
Switzerland already rejected the G7’s invitation to join the REPO a year ago. The United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Australia and other countries are cooperating within the group to siphon Russian oligarchs’ money and ensure compliance with economic sanctions.
