This is a well-established paradox in Switzerland. Start-ups from polytechnics or universities are very good at transforming scientific advances into commercial opportunities. But funding is lacking at the next stage, when these start-ups need to finance their growth. Two funds are currently in the launch phase in this niche. Update on the situation with their leaders.
This lack of capital is especially noticeable when the amounts exceed 5 million francs, observes Alexandre Meldem, of the Deep Tech Nation Switzerland foundation, which aims to improve national conditions for start-ups in the growth phase. The structure was created at the initiative of Swisscom, which wants to stimulate the raising of 50 billion over ten years. This is because beyond the threshold of 5 million, foreign capital represents between 70% and 96% of financing rounds, with the risk that the managers of the start-ups concerned and the intellectual property move to the countries where the capital came from.
