In the standings, Inter, who won their last three games, were two points ahead of Milan, who had won three of the previous four championships, but based on the last five games of the two teams, the red and blacks had reason to be confident:
Milan achieved one victory and one draw in the championship, also in the cup, which allowed them to advance, and won the Super Cup, so they were unbeaten for five games in a row.
The first half was about the “home” black and blue, but despite the massive possession advantage and ten shots, neither side could score a goal.
After the turn, however, the shock came quickly: after the visitors had won the ball, Alexis Saelemaekers’ shot was blocked by Yann Sommer. Christian Pulisic palmed it in front of him, and the American winger made no mistake from close range (0–1).
Inter pressed unwaveringly, which resulted in a penalty after videoing an opinionated situation near the goal.
Former Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu was standing behind the ball, but his shot towards the bottom right was blocked by Mike Maignan.
There was no more success for Inter, Milan made a joke of their city rival again, and with their success they overtook them in the standings.
