The New York Police Department opened an investigation Tuesday after several officers were targeted by snowballs during a rally in Washington Square Park in Manhattan, the day after a major winter storm. The incident occurred Monday as police responded to reports of a disruptive group.

According to AP News, a video shows two uniformed police officers walking through the park as snowballs are thrown at them “from all directions,” hitting them and covering them in snow. We also see an individual approach from behind and apply snow to an officer’s head. The police said in a press release that several police officers had been hit in the face and “transported by emergency services to a nearby hospital in stable condition”, without specifying the exact nature of the injuries.

Two people wanted by the police

A spokesperson for the New York Police Department (NYPD) had already confirmed that several officers “were hit in the face by snowballs” and taken to the hospital for treatment. The police chief, Jessica Tisch, denounced “shameful” and “criminal” behavior on X, confirming the opening of an investigation. Police also released images of two wanted people and asked for the public’s help in identifying them.
