The WSU Retiree Center is pleased to announce the “Eating Your Way to Good Health” Senior University course begins on Thursday, October 16. The class will run for five weeks from 2:30-4 p.m.; course dates are October 16, 23, and 30 and November 6 and 13.
Aging brings with it the necessity of maintaining proper physical, mental, and nutritional fitness to cope with the changes and challenges of getting older. This course will focus on essential features of nutrition for healthy living. Protein intake needs, weight management, microbiota of the “gut” for optimal health (e.g., nutrition, immune system, brain function), maintaining healthy blood/glucose levels, and nutritional limits of starches are some of the important topics to consider as we age. Class participants will be encouraged to tailor the course by suggesting other topics of general interest for exploration and discussion. Let’s talk about aging and achieving optimal nutrition and health.
In week one, will will discuss energy balance and “the best diet” for weight management, then moving in week two to a focus on starches. In week three, we will answer the question — can poor gut microbiota be causing you to be sick more often? In week four, we will examine protein intake as a key to health in older adults, and we will conclude by covering weight management, fasting, and the ketogenic diet.
The course is being taught by Kent Hansen. Kent Hansen received his M.S. in exercise xcience from the University of Montana and received his Ph.D. in nutritional science from the University of Wisconsin. He loves studying and talking about exercise and nutrition whether for health or for performance.
The fee for this course is $40, and registration is required. Please register soon if you’re interested: bit.ly/480hTZd.
