A Century of Service: KDA Launches Oral Health Campaign for Seniors
Marking its 100th anniversary, the Korean Dental Association (KDA) is launching a nationwide initiative focused on improving oral health among senior citizens. The “healthy Seniors” contest, commencing on April 21st, aims to highlight the importance of dental care in maintaining a high quality of life for the elderly population.
Spotlight on Senior Oral Health: Addressing a Critical Need
The KDA’s initiative comes at a crucial time.According to recent studies, poor oral health in seniors is linked to a variety of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pneumonia. Furthermore, difficulties with chewing and swallowing due to dental problems can lead to malnutrition and decreased social interaction. The “healthy Seniors” contest directly addresses these concerns by promoting preventative care and education.

“Healthy Seniors” Contest: How to Participate
The contest is open to individuals aged 70 and older. Participation involves a simple process:
- Contact your local dental society to register by phone.
- Visit a designated cooperative dental clinic for a screening,including a panoramic X-ray.
Each local dental society will select four participants, resulting in 64 “healthy Seniors” being chosen nationwide.
Prizes and Recognition: celebrating Healthy Smiles
Winners will receive awards and oral hygiene products valued at 100,000 won. The awards ceremonies will be held during local dental societies’ Oral Health Day celebrations in early June. A especially special honor will be bestowed upon a centenarian winner, who will be invited to the KDA’s central event for a special award.

The Broader Impact: Promoting Oral health Awareness
Beyond the contest, the KDA hopes to raise public awareness about the importance of preventative dental care throughout life. This initiative serves as a reminder that maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for overall health and well-being, particularly as we age. Similar initiatives in other countries, such as the UK’s “Smile for Life” campaign, have demonstrated the positive impact of targeted oral health programs for seniors. The KDA’s “Healthy Seniors” contest is a notable step towards ensuring that older adults in Korea can enjoy healthy smiles and a better quality of life.
