Salim Karim Iskef’s Final Message to Fiancé Before Sweden’s Deadliest Mass Shooting

by Archynetys World Desk

In a poignant and heartbreaking turn of events, Salim Karim Iskef, a 28-year-old nursing student, managed to connect with his fiancé Kareen Alia via video call moments before his life was cut short. Overwhelmed with pain and clutching his last moments, he conveyed his deepest love and asked her to look after his mother. Unfortunately, the call marked their final communication as Salim died later in the week from his injuries in what became Sweden’s deadliest mass shooting.

Iskef’s fiancé called back, but sadly, there was no answer. Upon learning of the routine of the tragic attack, she discovered that Salim had become one of the ten victims. The rampage occurred at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Orebro, where he was studying to become a nurse.

Love and Dreams Cut Short

The couple was eagerly preparing for their summer wedding at a home they had recently purchased. Father Jacob Kasselia of their local Orthodox Christian church expressed the grief the community felt, saying, “He had all of these dreams in his heart. Now, unfortunately, all of these dreams are gone. Their light has been put out.”

The perpetrator, armed with three guns, ten empty magazines, and unused ammunition, met his own end, though it was unclear how he died. A total of ten individuals lost their lives, while six others required hospitalization. Five people suffered from severe gunshot wounds, while the rest sustained minor injuries.

The Community Comes Together in Grief

Campus Risbergska serves various educational needs, offering classes from primary and secondary education to vocational training. It serves individuals aged 20 and above, including immigrants, people with disabilities, and those aiming to enhance their Swedish language skills.

Iskef’s family’s journey from Syria during the ongoing civil war adds a poignant dimension to the tragedy. His sister, Hanan Eskif, told Swedish broadcaster TV4, “We’ve lived together our entire lives. We worked together, studied together, went to church together. My whole life was with him. How am I supposed to live without him?”

The family held a memorial service at their Orthodox Christian church, enduring the pain of an uncertain closure. Hanan explained, “We keep looking out the window thinking maybe he’ll return and knock on the door, and we’ll have to open it. We don’t sleep, we don’t eat, don’t drink. Nothing, we just sit and look out.”

Calls for Tighter Gun Control

The tragedy has reignited discussions on gun control. The Swedish government and Sweden Democrats plan to introduce stricter gun control measures, including limitations on semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15.

Currently, Sweden has stringent gun regulations. Applicants must obtain a license, prove lawful intent, and ensure secure storage. Access to fully automatic and one-handed weapons is highly restricted and typically time-limited. Permits are revoked if the weapon is modified.

Despite these measures, with approximately 660,000 registered gun owners at the beginning of 2024, holding roughly 2 million firearms, Sweden faces challenges. Of these, 1.6 million are registered for hunting, and another 176,000 for target shooting. Police-approved secure cabinets are required for storage, ensuring weapons are safeguarded.

The chilling events at Campus Risbergska are a stark reminder of the need for vigilant gun laws to protect the community. As Sweden takes steps to mitigate future violence, the nation mourns the loss of Salim and the other victims.
