Russia has withdrawn its forces from a military base in northeastern Syria, Reuters reported, citing its sources.
Russian forces have been at Qamishli Airport since 2019. Government forces under the leadership of President Ahmed al-Sharaa have seized parts of northern and eastern Syria from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces
A fragile ceasefire between the parties was extended on January 24 by 15 days.
Two of the sources reported, that Russian forces began a gradual withdrawal from Qamishli Airport last week. Some of the forces are expected to move to Russia’s Khmeimim air base in western Syria, while others will return to Russia.
According to another source, Russian military vehicles and heavy weaponry have been transported from Qamishli to Hmeimim military airfield in the past two days.
Russian daily Kommersant reported last week, citing an unnamed Syrian source, that the Syrian government may ask Russian forces to leave the base. after pushing the Kurds out because “there is nothing for (the Russians) to do there”.
