Rory McIlroy: Round 2 Scores & Updates | Golf Leaderboard

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Rory McIlroy avoided Australian Open disaster with a ridiculous escape act on the 17th hole, while playing partner Min Woo Lee surged to within one shot of the lead on Friday afternoon at Royal Melbourne.

McIlroy appeared destined for disaster when a swing and a miss in the tea tree on the 14th costhim a shot and pushed him outside the cut line, but he responded with birdies at 15, 17 and 18. The birdie on 17 came after one of the best shots in recent memory at an Australian Open.

The Masters champion missed the fairway to the right at the par 5 and it was in the wasteland area with his ball up against a small piece of shrub.

It did not phase McIlroy, however, as he cracked a high fading iron around the trees and to the front of the green.

Stunning the packed crowd that followed him, Lee and Adam Scott all afternoon, and then sparking another massive roar when he two putted for birdie.

It got better, too, with McIlroy playing the 18th to perfection to finish his round with back-to-back birdies.

McIlroy signed off for a three-under par second round of 68, taking him to -2 for the tournament with the projected cut line sitting at even par.

Lee, meanwhile, produced highlights galore in his six-under par round of 65.

The Australian stunned with a hole-out eagle at the par 4 10th, letting out a mighty celebration, lifting his arms in the air and running down the fairway as the ball took two bounces on the green before rolling in the cup.

He made four birdies for the day and crucially did not drop a shot to reach -8, one shot behind leaders Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Daniel Rodrigues.

Scott is a further shot back at -7 after he shot a superb five-under par 66 that included a near tap-in eagle at the par 5 14th.

In more good news for the Australians, Cameron Smith went bogey free to go one better than Scott’s 66 and sit at -7.

The 2022 Open champion had not made the cut in his last seven world rankings events, but will play the weekend for the first time this year in a 72-hole tournament.

Portugal’s Rodrigues peeled off the low round of the day so far, a seven-under par 64 shortly after the PGA Tour-bound Neergard-Petersen fired a five-under par 66, making the most of the calmer morning conditions with his high ball flight.

The 26-year-old Dane missed the cut at the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland last week, but has bounced back strongly to feel poised for a shot at a fourth professional title.

“Certainly I feel like I’ve proved over the last year or so that I have the level to compete out here and be in the thick of things on Sunday,” Neergard-Petersen said.

Niemann and Vilips will not be joining the weekend action, however.

The Chilean LIV Golf star shot a five-over par 76 on Friday to tumble well below the cut line at +7 overall.

At the par 3 seventh, his 16th hole of the day, Niemann even putted with a wedge as he knew his tournament was done.

Vilips, who claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory earlier this year, shot a 73, including a triple bogey at the famous par 4 sixth, to finish +5 in a disappointing homecoming for the 24-year-old.

Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz finished his round two shots back from Neergaard-Petersen and Rodrigues, but was in a share of the lead on his second nine before too late bogeys dropped him back.

A further shot back at -6 are New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and Korean Si Woo Kim, who has come to Melbourne this week to push his claims for next year’s Presidents Cup with International team captain Geoff Ogilvy.

Fox, meanwhile, felt like he let an opportunity slip with an even par round after starting the day with a share of the lead.

“I mean after yesterday it was always going to be hard to back up a round like that,” the two-time PGA Tour winner said.

“Obviously a lot easier today. I just felt like one of those days where I was always in between clubs and that’s not great out here.”

Australians Cameron Smith, Elvis Smylie, who was an overnight co-leader, and Marc Leishman are among the afternoon field.
