Rim Hike: Distance & Views

Bielefeld (ots) – SI / Bielefeld / A2 / Paderborn, Bielefeld, Bad Salzuflen – On Saturday, December 13th, 2025, highway police stopped a drunk driver who had fled after an accident on the A33 and continued his journey in a badly damaged car.

The Opel Vectra was first noticed around 10 p.m. on the A33 at the Sennelager junction in the direction of Osnabrück. Several concerned drivers called the police on an emergency call because they had seen a car that had a flat tire and was already driving on the rim. The witnesses also reported flying sparks and vehicle parts that had already fallen off the Opel.

The driver switched from the A33 to the A2 at the Bielefeld motorway junction to exit at the Herford / Bad Salzuflen junction. The alerted motorway police finally stopped him on the B239.

The 37-year-old driver from Leipheim, Bavaria, appeared to be heavily intoxicated and had difficulty keeping his balance while standing. A breath alcohol test confirmed the officers’ impression.

The Leipheimer was unable to show a driver’s license.

He was taken to the highway station for a blood sample.

Officers assessed the damage to the vehicle. Not only was the front right tire damaged, the entire front apron of the car was torn off. This was on the back seat of the car. There was an open bottle of liquor on the passenger seat. The police had the Opel towed away for security.

They filed a complaint against the 37-year-old for driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license and hit and run.

It is still unclear where the first accident site was. Due to the significant damage to the right side of the vehicle, it can be assumed that the car veered off the road to the right and collided with the guardrail.

The Traffic Commissioner 1 will receive information about the accident on 0521/545-0.
