QRIS Tap iPhone: BI Explains Why It Doesn’t Work

by Archynetys Economy Desk

KOMPAS.com – Bank Indonesia (BI)’s newest payment feature, QRIS Tap, cannot yet be used by iPhone users. BI explained that this limitation occurred because Apple had not yet opened access to near field communication (NFC) technology for third parties.

BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta asked iPhone users to be patient because currently NFC access on Apple devices is only available for Apple Pay services.

“QRIS users, please be patient with the iPhone. Because currently Apple has not opened the NFC feature. It has only opened it for Apple Pay,” said Filianingsih at the press conference for the February 2026 BI Board of Governors Meeting, quoted KOMPAS.com.

BI and Apple are already communicating

Filianingsih said that Apple Indonesia and Apple’s head office had discussed with BI the possibility of opening NFC access to support QRIS Tap.

“Apple Indonesia and headquarter“It has arrived and they will explore the QRIS Tap feature to see the possibility of opening the NFC feature as they have done in the European Union,” said Filianingsih.

However, until now, there is no certainty when QRIS Tap can be used on iPhone devices.

QRIS Tap is a development of the QRIS payment system which previously relied on scanning QR codes.

Different from conventional QRIS, QRIS Tap utilizes NFC technology so that transactions are carried out by holding the cellphone close to the reader machine.

Users simply open a payment application that supports QRIS, select the QRIS Tap method, then press the cellphone to the NFC terminal. Transactions are processed in real time without the need to visually scan QR codes.

Currently, QRIS Tap can only be used on Android phones that have an active NFC feature and payment applications that support this service.

TheVerge Apple demonstrated Apple Pay at the launch of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch in California, Tuesday (9/9/2014) local time.

Transactions continue to rise

Even though it is not yet available on iPhone, BI noted that the use of QRIS Tap continues to increase, especially in the transportation sector as well as hotels and restaurants.

Filianingsih said that QRIS Tap had processed more than 475,000 transactions, with growth of around 7.9 percent monthly (month to month/mtm).

In terms of nominal value, the recorded transaction value reached around IDR 4.6 billion, growing 6.4 percent monthly.

“Well, nominal value has also increased by 6.4 percent month to month or around IDR 4.6 billion,” he said.

QRIS Tap was developed as part of the national payment system digitalization strategy. This feature is intended to speed up and simplify transactions, especially in high-frequency sectors such as public transportation, modern retail, hotels and restaurants.

Even though adoption continues to grow, expanding the use of QRIS Tap in the iPhone ecosystem still depends on Apple’s policy regarding opening NFC access to third party developers.

BI stated that it would continue to coordinate with various parties to expand the interoperability of the national digital payment system, including encouraging device support for QRIS Tap.
