Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken told De Morgen newspaper that if Russia ever decided to attack Brussels, the alliance’s response would be immediate and devastating: “If Putin attacks the Belgian capital, he will attack the heart of NATO and we will raze Moscow to the ground.”

This is perhaps one of the harshest threats ever made by a Western European leader. Franken emphasized that Western countries should not be afraid of the Kremlin, because “threats only affect those who submit to them.”

The Russian embassy in Belgium has already called the minister’s statement “provocative” and “irresponsible”. However, Franken himself doubts that Putin would risk attacking Brussels, as it would be a direct attack on the entire North Atlantic Alliance.

Military analysts remind that the military potential of NATO far exceeds the potential of Russia. After two years of war against Ukraine, the professional part of the Russian army has been practically destroyed, losing thousands of tanks and armored vehicles.

Russia no longer has enough equipment even to transport ammunition – horses and donkeys are increasingly used at the front. Against this background, the threat to “level Moscow to the ground” sounds not like a figure of speech, but a military-technical fact: NATO countries really have all the means to do it: from high-precision missiles to strategic aviation and nuclear weapons.

Franken also noted that he is most concerned about Russia’s hybrid actions: destabilization, provocation and incitement on the alliance’s eastern borders. “The ‘little green men’ in Estonia inciting the Russian-speaking minority against the ‘Nazi regime.’ Before you know it, they’ll be annexing part of Estonia,” he said.
