Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he is ready to extend the last arms control contract between Washington and Moscow, which limits the number of nuclear weapons available to each side if US President Donald Trump has done the same, Reuters reported.

The new contract to cut strategic weapons, or a new start that limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the US and Russia can deploy, as well as the deployment of rockets and bombers based on land and submarines to deliver them on February 5, 2026.

In a statement during a meeting with members of the Security Council of Russia, Putin said that the termination of the treaty would have negative consequences for global stability, the Associated Press reported.

Putin said at a Russian Security Council meeting that he was ready to extend it by one year in the interest of global non -proliferation and to help stimulate the Washington dialogue on the heir of the treaty.

Putin also pointed out that Russia is capable of responding to any threats, not with words, but through military-technical measures, TASS reported.

“I emphasize, and no one should doubt that Russia is able to respond to any existing and emerging threats. To answer not words, but by applying military-technical measures,” the Russian president stressed.

The new contract start, signed by the then Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, restricted each party to no more than 1550 nuclear warheads and 700 missiles and bombers. Its approaching expiration and lack of dialogue to conclude a new agreement are worried by supporters of control over arms, the AP notes.

In February 2023, Putin suspended Moscow’s involvement in the treaty, saying Russia could not allow the United States to inspect its nuclear sites at a time when Washington and its NATO allies have openly declared Moscow’s defeat in Ukraine. However, Moscow stressed that it does not completely withdraw from the pact and will continue to observe the restrictions on nuclear weapons set out in the contract, BTA recalls.
