One of the frustrations of retro gaming fans is the lack of PS3 games on the PS5. Although no release is imminent, Implicit Conversions has not given up hope of emulating games on the console. The company has already partnered with Sony to add PS1 and PS2 titles to its PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalogue. In an interview with YouTuber Mystic ( ), CEO Bill Litshauer gave an update on the situation CEO Bill Litshauer gave an update on this initiative.
The cellular processor that powers the PS3 was a powerful component when the console debuted in 2006. However, the unconventional architecture made developing projects for the console more difficult. With the PS4 and PS5, Sony went with the more familiar x86-64 option. Unfortunately, the only way to play PS3 games on newer consoles is through cloud streaming.
Since streaming often introduces additional latency, emulation could provide a smoother experience. With a PS3 emulator on his roadmap, Litshauer explained that it was “technically possible.” The company has brought in a third party to help with its efforts, but that is not a priority at this time. Even though PS2 favorites are more in demand, Litshauer thinks the PS5 or PS6 could still benefit from PlayStation 3 support.
PS3 emulation is possible on other platforms
Programs like RPCS3 are technically demanding, but they provide access to PS3 games on PC and Mac. This is why many retro gaming enthusiasts are disappointed that Sony’s latest consoles cannot replicate this feature.
By filling this gap, the catalog of PlayStation Plus classics could be expanded. Some subscribers have complained about a limited selection of older games. It is likely that licensing issues are preventing some titles from joining the service. Rights to certain securities may depend on agreements with companies that no longer exist.
Microsoft has had its own difficulties getting Xbox 360 games to run on PC. Rumor has it that the company may also use an emulator to ensure playability on future Windows devices and Xbox consoles.
