Florida Board Rejects Santa Ono for University of Florida Presidency

Chris rufo, an activist against DEI, spearheaded the conservative resistance. Simultaneously, several Florida elected officials claimed that ONO did not adequately protect Jewish students during his tenure as president of the University of michigan.
The Board of Governors ultimately voted 10 to 6 against ONO’s appointment to the University of Florida presidency amidst these concerns.
Paul Renner, a former republican legislator who had previously sought the university of Florida presidency, voted against the appointment, as revealed during board discussions. Throughout the meeting, RENNER questioned ONO extensively about his past support for DEI, leading fellow board members to defend ONO, accusing RENNER of “interrogating” him and challenging the impartiality of his questions.
The vote occurred after the University of Florida Board of Trustees approved ONO’s hiring the previous week, following a public interview largely focused on DEI. In that interview, ONO distanced himself from DEI, asserting that the initiatives began with positive intentions but ultimately became divisive. he stated that they diverted resources from student success efforts and stifled dialog, which he cited as the reason for closing Michigan’s DEI office this spring. (ONO resigned from the Michigan presidency in May to pursue the University of Florida position.)
“I am here to ensure that DEI never returns to the University of Florida,” ONO said Tuesday.
ONO had previously condemned systemic racism and advocated for the necessity of DEI. however, on Tuesday-as in his public interview with the University of Florida’s Board of Trustees last week-ONO emphasized his ideological shift, which ultimately failed to persuade the board.
