US Security Minister Kristi Noem faces growing opposition in Congress.

After Renee Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis last week, more than 50 Democratic representatives have joined a motion to impeach Noem.

This is reported by the American website Axios.

The proposal, which is being put forward by Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois, marks a clear shift in the party’s stance on impeachment proceedings during President Donald Trump’s second term.

Previous attempts to hold members of the administration accountable have received little support within the party.

More join in

According to Axios, dissatisfaction with Noem has grown sharply after the mother of three, Renee Good, was shot and killed on an open street in Minneapolis – an incident that has triggered strong reactions against the ministry’s handling of security and police work.

After the shooting, Noem quickly claimed that Good had tried to run over the ICE agents, describing the incident as an act of terrorism in which the agent acted in self-defense.

A total of 53 Democrats have now signed the proposal to impeach the security minister, who also heads the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Among them are several who represent swing states, such as Gabe Vasquez (New Mexico), Brittany Pettersen (Colorado) and Eric Sorensen (Illinois).

Also more center-oriented profiles such as Angie Craig (Minnesota) and Seth Moulton (Massachusetts) have joined the initiative.

Three charges

The proposal against Noem is scheduled to be presented formally on Wednesday, and contains three main accusations:

  • Obstruction of Congress: For denying elected officials access to the ministry’s premises and withholding funds granted by Congress.
  • Breach of public trust: For alleged violations of the constitutionally protected rights of persons in ICE’s custody.
  • Self-enrichment: For awarding contracts worth $220 million to a company with close ties to her own communications staff.

– Must be removed

In a letter to colleagues, Kelly writes that Noem and her department “have systematically violated Americans’ rights, terrorized our cities and prevented Congress from doing its job.”

Several use similar formulations. Representative Gabe Vasquez says Noem “needs to be removed from office” for having masked agents “terrorize communities.”

Not everyone in the party agrees. During a closed session Monday, Representative Susie Lee of Nevada warned that an impeachment trial could backfire on Democrats in vulnerable constituencies.

– A frivolous stunt

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rejects all the claims made by the Democratic representatives. A spokesperson refers to the initiative as “a frivolous stunt in a serious time”.

– While our officials are experiencing a 1,300 percent increase in attacks against them, Representative Kelly chooses to engage in “show politics” instead of cleaning up his own hometown, Chicago, the statement says.

The department claims that Noem is “doing his job and protecting the American people”.
