The municipality of Evere, Belgium, has officially inaugurated a new sports complex designed too meet the needs of its growing population. The opening coincides with significant disruptions to Tram line 55, sparking mixed reactions from residents.

According to the bourgmestre Alessandro Zappala, “Evere had to have a sports infrastructure of this ambition in view of its population increase in recent years. “ The new facility aims to address the increasing demand for sports and recreational spaces within the community.

The complex incorporates elements of the original building,preserving the old entrance adorned with a mosaic by artist Jo Delahaut. the architectural design,by the Altiplan office and executed by Jacques Delens,draws inspiration from Delahaut’s mosaic,with corresponding colors used throughout the interior and exterior.

New Sports Facilities Address Growing Needs

“Our sports halls came to saturation and we could no longer respond to requests from Éverois clubs.”

David Cordonnier, the first alderman in charge of public works, stated that “The current facilities were aging and no longer made it possible to offer the quality of reception in our gym. A new complex makes it possible to meet the challenges of tomorrow in our public buildings.” The upgraded facilities are expected to provide a higher quality experiance for users.

Jean-luc Muleo, alderman of sports, added, ““Our sports halls came to saturation and we could no longer respond to requests from Éverois clubs”” and “The opening of these two new rooms is a boon for Everoises and Éverois. “ The new complex includes provisions for people with reduced mobility, with three dedicated locations and handisport-friendly facilities.

Tram 55 Interruption Causes Frustration

The inauguration of the sports complex is somewhat overshadowed by the two-year interruption of Tram 55 between Tilleul and Da Vinci, scheduled to last until mid-2027. This has led to considerable frustration among residents, with some expressing sentiments such as “Two years, are they serious?” and citing “A lack of consideration.”

Beliris financed the project up to 8.8 million euros. The municipality supported the study and design phases and will manage the building.
