MSA Elections see Varied Turnout Across France

Voter participation in the recent Mutualité Social Agricole elections highlights the challenges and regional differences in engaging agricultural stakeholders.


In May, the Mutualité social Agricole (MSA) held elections for its representatives across france. The vote count occurred on Thursday, may 22, revealing key insights into voter engagement within this specific social framework for agriculture. A central concern was the participation rate, crucial for the regime’s future.

Nationwide, approximately half a million people participated. Within the Caisse Ardèche-Drôme-Loire region, 15,093 of the 72,594 registered voters cast thier ballots, resulting in a 20.79% participation rate. This figure is lower than the 26.08% national average recorded in 2020 during the previous election. The breakdown by college shows varying levels of engagement: 28.60% for the 1is college (operators and retirees), 14.70% for the 2e college (employees), and 24.03% for the 3e college (labor employers).

Specifically in the Loire region, the participation rate stood at 20.81%, with 5,274 voters out of 25,341 registered. The 1is College saw a rate close to 30% (29.79%), while the 2e and 3e colleges recorded 13.28% and 20.80% respectively.

Across the three departments of the Caisse,440 delegates were elected,with 159 representing the Loire: 68 from the 1is college,63 from the 2e,and 28 from the 3e.

Results by College

In the 1is College, 195 candidates were elected by 8,624 voters. Within the Loire, 65 of the 68 elected officials came from the JA-FDSEA lists, with 2 from the peasant confederation and one individual affiliated with the FDSEA.

The 2e college saw 171 delegates elected by 5,879 voters. Union depiction was as follows: 54.39% for the CFDT, 32.16% for the CFE-CGC,11.7% for the CGT,0.58% for the CFTC,0.58% for FO, and 0.58% for CFE-CGC + CGT. In the Loire, of the 63 candidates from the 2nd college, 43 were from the CFDT, 17 from the CFE-CGC, and one from the CGT, with one candidate holding the CFE-CGC + CGT label.

For the 3e College, 74 candidates were elected by 590 voters. In the Loire, the JA-FDSEA lists secured 28 out of the 29 elected officials.

The elections do not stop there. On June 19, in Valence, the delegates will elect the new board of directors, the president and 1is Vice-president.
