Best ink multifunction printer
It has been a very close comparison as reflected in the final scores. However, the Epson EcoTank ET-3950 has emerged as the winner. What stands out the most is the excellent performance of its ink bottles, without neglecting its speed and printing quality.
A few years ago I decided to buy a multifunction ink printer, mainly for my daughter’s school work and also to correct on paper the articles that I have to deliver since I work remotely. At that time I compared several options compared to laser printers, but another reason why I chose the ink is the quality it offers to the print photographs.
Currently, these printers offer interesting advances such as the possibility of integrating with the mobile phone through applications developed by the manufacturers themselves. In addition, thanks to its Wi-Fi connectivity, it is possible to manage them remotely: print documents or photos from your smartphone, scan texts to share them in the cloud or send them by email, photocopy and even order new consumables when the ink is about to run out. All this with the convenience of not having to be in front of the printer.
How we have chosen and tested the products
To make this comparison I have chosen four multifunction ink printers that have their own application. They are all from recognized brands and cover a wide price range, since not all users have the same needs when purchasing equipment of this type. Each one has replaced the printer we have at home for several days. In that time I have used them to print work documentation, several of my daughter’s school projects, and photographs waiting to be framed.
In each of the analyzes, I have taken into account the following aspects:
- Design: if the multifunction adapts to the available space (the ideal is a structure that is as compact as possible). Also the quality of its manufacturing.
- Application: what the app is like, the process to pair with the device, options it offers…
- Results: they are related to the quality of the printouts and the readability of the documents. This quality also extends to color reproduction.
- Overall performance: From the point of view of start-up and operation, I have analyzed the features that each model incorporates and whether it really meets our needs. I have also assessed whether the paper jams or if any unexpected errors arise during use; the ease of scrolling through your menu; and whether the ink runs out quickly or not.
Goodbye to traditional cartridges!

Who is it for: users who print many pages and make intensive use of the printer.
Why we recommend it: The feature that distinguishes it and makes it completely different from the rest is that it dispenses with traditional ink cartridges. It uses four independent tanks – one for black and three for cyan, magenta and yellow – that are extremely easy to refill. Simply lift the corresponding lid and open a small door that leaves the filling nozzles accessible. To refill them, ink bottles are used whose capacity is greater than that of the cartridges. Something that I found notable is that the design completely prevents spills: the ink only flows when the bottle is placed perfectly upright over its nozzle, making the process clean and safe. In addition, since the outside of the tanks is transparent, you control the remaining capacity at all times.
Although it is the least economical option in the comparison, its performance makes up for it, making it a good choice for home users who print frequently or handle large volumes of paper. It is the fastest of all and its tray holds up to 250 sheets. Regarding its control panel, I liked the mechanism that allows it to be raised a few centimeters to use it more comfortably.
Its weak points: I tried to configure it from the laptop, but I was unable to get the drivers to download. On the other hand, when I did it from a desktop I didn’t have any problems; And they both have Windows 11. The drawer where the pages are stored is just below the tray where the prints come out and if you run out of paper in the middle of printing, it is not easy to insert it. As I noted before, the ink comes with refillable tanks. It’s easy, because you just put the bottle in the color and it fills itself. When I did it, it picked up all the colors well except black: I had to clean the heads so that it printed perfectly.

Front and rear cassette paper feed: Canon TS7650i

Who is it for: If you want a model that stands out for its photographic quality, this proposal might interest you.
Why we recommend it: It is not only compact, but also discreet, allowing it to easily integrate into any home environment without being ‘invasive’. Its 2.7-inch folding touch screen makes navigation easy and makes operation truly intuitive, avoiding getting lost in endless menus. It works efficiently for common printing tasks, but it stands out especially when printing photos. I tried, for example, with several photos from Halloween night and the result was remarkable: the colors are vivid and well saturated, the gradation is rich, the level of detail is surprising and there is hardly any grain.
On the other hand, this printer has a very interesting software ecosystem. Applications like Easy-PhotoPrint Editor help you easily edit and personalize your photos, as well as create collages, calendars, cards, or even record labels and stickers, all from pre-designed templates that speed up and simplify the creative process. I was trying it with my daughter and we had a great time.
I found its initial configuration very intuitive, both from the computer and from the mobile phone through the Canon PRINT app. During testing, the connection has remained stable and the printer responds quickly to all commands sent from different devices, even when printing from the cloud or services such as Google Drive, providing convenience and flexibility to work from anywhere in the house.
Its weak points: The ink in the cartridges is consumed relatively quickly and the USB cable is not included. I had to cut the edge of my USB cable because the hole in the printer is small.

Output tray for 50-sheet paper: Brother DCP-J1310DW

Who is it for: users interested in an economical model that stands out for its printing speed, but does not need to print large quantities of paper.
Why we recommend it: I especially highlight that it supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi, compared to the usual 2.4 GHz standard, which makes it easier to send heavy documents from your computer or mobile phone quickly and without interruptions. Likewise, the connection remains fast and stable, even when my partner, our daughter and I use the network simultaneously. Meanwhile, the 150-sheet input tray is easy to open and close (in fact, it never jammed) and its color screen offers excellent readability. I completed the installation and commissioning processes without complications.
In terms of quality, it perfectly meets the usual needs for printed documents and scans; The texts are clear and the colors are acceptable. However, its performance in reproducing photographs and graphics does not stand out as much: the speed and intensity of the colors are somewhat more discreet compared to the competition, while still providing good quality results. And speaking of speed, its performance is close to the 16 pages per minute in monochrome indicated on its specification sheet, although it decreases slightly (predictably) when printing in color and double-sided, which could be an inconvenience if you plan to handle large volumes of paper.
Your weak points: Taking into account its price and the service it offers, I do not consider it to have any significant weak point.

Who is it for: If you want a multifunction print for home that stands out for its design and user experience, look!
Why we recommend it: Until now I had never considered that a multifunction printer could be pretty. I love its white design and clean lines, which convey a feeling of modernity. I am convinced that users who value both technology and aesthetic integration in the home will not be able to resist. In one of the corners of the front it has a 2.4-inch color touch screen, which not only provides a sophisticated touch, but also improves the user experience, being able to navigate through its menus and functions without the need for physical buttons. During testing, I found the learning curve quite simple.
It is not intended for intensive use; Personally, I would use it at specific times. And in terms of quality, it more than delivers. In addition, I have noticed that it offers solid performance in color and photography: color reproduction is balanced, blacks look better defined, and nuances are very well achieved. This can be seen both in the photos and in the presentations and documents with graphics, where the final result seems clearly more careful to me.
My experience with the app has been good and, among other things, you can check ink levels, receive alerts when the printer runs out of paper, and create shortcuts for the tasks I do most frequently. In general, I find it a comfortable and practical tool for everyday use.
Its weak points: It only uses two consumables, one black and another tricolor that combines the basic colors into one. Although this simplifies installation and maintenance tasks, it means that if one color runs out, the entire tri-color cartridge must be replaced.

Frequently asked questions
For what type of user is an ink multifunction recommended?
It adapts very well to home, student and small office environments where printing documents, photographs or school assignments is not daily or too intensive.
Is the ink for this type of printer expensive?
Ink can be expensive if normal cartridges are used, although today many printers work with ink bottles or XL cartridges that make printing more economical.
What maintenance do they require?
The essential thing is to take care of the heads (most clean them on their own), keep the firmware up to date and use it periodically so that the ink does not dry out.
How do I know which model is right for me?
Before buying, look at how much you print, if you want good quality for your photographs, how much each page will cost, if it has Wi-Fi or can be used with your mobile phone, the size of the device and if it includes extras such as automatic double-sided printing.
