1. Maryland launches energy assistance plan to cope with rising energy costs in winter

Continued cold weather and rising energy costs are putting additional pressure on Maryland residents already struggling to pay their bills. Rigel Moore, director of the Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs, said there are multiple assistance programs available to provide immediate help for residents facing energy disruptions. There are also dedicated programs to help tenants and owners improve the energy efficiency of their homes, thereby reducing energy bills. Moore pointed out that special federal and state funds jointly support projects such as the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). She urged residents in need of energy assistance to submit applications through the online platform or the “One” app, with the entire process taking about 20 to 30 minutes.

Moore said residents can use their phone, computer or tablet, or forward the link to anyone; we will determine your eligibility. Special grants exist for specific energy sources, depending on whether the residence is supplied with gas or electricity. .

2. Republican Dan Cox announces his candidacy for governor of Maryland to fight Moore again

Republican Dan Cox, who lost to Democratic Gov. Wes Moore in the 2022 gubernatorial election, has officially filed documents to announce that he will run for governor again this year. The former Maryland congressman’s candidacy information was announced on the official website of the state’s Board of Elections on Friday, and his running mate is Lieutenant Governor candidate Rob Cropp. The Cox campaign is working on a website, saying it will be online soon.

President Trump publicly supported Cox when she first ran for governor. According to the state House of Representatives resume, Cox has ten children and served as a state representative from 2019 to 2023, representing the 4th District where Carroll and Frederick counties are located. When he first challenged Moore, Cox, a constitutional lawyer and first-term state representative, adhered to the conservative stance of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” platform. He has spoken out against the promotion of “critical race theory” and “gender identity indoctrination” in schools, and has resisted coronavirus lockdown measures. Cox lost the 2022 election to Wes Moore.

Cox’s filing on Friday expands the Republican gubernatorial race to include Baltimore businessman and Baltimore Blasters football team owner Ed Hale, who recently switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
