Tensions Erupt in Manipur as Protesters Clash with Security Forces

On Friday evening, tensions escalated in the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district of Manipur as protesters clashed with police. The unrest was sparked by demands for the withdrawal of security forces, particularly the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), from their deployment at Uyokching, a village bordering Imphal West.

Protesters descended on the Kangpokpi police station, pelting stones and voicing their anger over the continued presence of central forces in their area. Kangpokpi SP M Prabhakar was reportedly among those injured in the clash.

Economic Blockade and 24-Hour Shutdown

The unrest follows an indefinite economic blockade and a 24-hour total shutdown enforced by Kuki-Zo groups. These actions are a direct protest against the deployment of central security forces in the neighboring village of Saibol.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) also declared a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district to protest alleged baton charges on women in Saibol village on December 31. Kuki-Zo Council, which leads the economic blockade, aims to continue protests until the government respects tribal rights and dignity.

During the economic blockade, vehicular movement and essential commodities passing through Kuki-Zo areas were halted. Henlienthang Thanglet, the chairman of the Kuki-Zo Council, threatened to reimpose the blockade if the government fails to ensure the safety of the buffer zone and compensate the women injured by security forces.

Previous Clashes and Tensions

Tensions in Kangpokpi have escalated following a clash on Tuesday between a mob of Kuki-Zo women and security forces. The mob had attempted to disrupt the deployment of a combined team of the Army, BSF, and CRPF, leading to communal unrest.

The police were forced to manage the situation using tear gas, resulting in injuries among protesters. This incident underscores the ongoing ethnic strife in the state and raises concerns about the safety of civilians in the region.

Impact on the Community

The recent events in Kangpokpi highlight the deep-seated grievances and mistrust between tribal communities and central authorities in Manipur. The prolonged tensions and economic blockades are likely to have significant social and economic implications for the local community.

Residents face disruptions in daily life and economic activities, exacerbating an already fragile situation due to the ongoing deployment of security forces. The government and tribal leaders must find a pathway to address these issues and restore harmony in the region.

Call for Dialogue and Resolution

The ongoing unrest in Kangpokpi demands urgent attention from both the government and tribal communities. A dialogue-based approach is essential to address the root causes of the conflict and establish trust between all parties involved.

Efforts towards a peaceful resolution should encompass discussions on human rights, community security, and the demilitarization of tribal areas. By fostering a collaborative environment, stakeholders can work towards a sustainable and peaceful future for Kangpokpi and the surrounding districts.
