Berrettini-Carreno: 6-3; 6-4: Matteo wins, Italy one step away from the third Davis Cup in a row
(from our correspondent in Bologna, Gaia Piccardi) Italy is one step away from regaining the Davis Cupthe first at home, the third in a row, the fourth in our history. Matteo Berrettini is present himself in the first singles with Pablo Carreno Busta, the match between number two of Italy and Spain which, resolved in two sets (6-3, 6-4) directs the salad bowl. In a match blocked by tension and full of errors, the blue clings to the certainty of service (13 aces against the opponent’s 3) to undermine the defense of the Spaniard, nervous to the point of deserving a warning at the end of the second set, after a racket on the chair by the chair umpire, guilty – according to him – of not having interrupted the point due to the excesses of the public.
A break per set, at 4-3 in the first, at 4-4 in the second, sends Italy to serve for the match with Flavio Cobolli with the fundamental collaboration of Carreno Busta, who has two deadly moments of blackout in which he sinks 0-40 providing the assist to the Roman. Of course the tennis of the Finals was different, certainly the comparisons between Sinner and Alcaraz, the notable absentees of this Italy-Spain, raise the bar to heights that are impossible for all the others, certainly theirs – of the number two and the number one – compared to Davis seems like another sport. But the winning serve with which Berrettini sealed the match caused the building erected inside the Bologna Fair to explode, a cluster of stands that swayed dangerously under the blows of the cheering fans. Next year the city promises to have a new sports hall available, where Virtus will play, ready to host another Davis team. Let’s hope so. We will have to get there as holders. It’s Cobolli’s turn with Munar, the crossroads of leaders. Our Cup passes through here.
