Airstrikes targeting Iranian military leadership and nuclear infrastructure have sparked retaliatory attacks and raised fears of a broader Middle Eastern conflict.
early Friday, Israel initiated a series of airstrikes against Iran, reportedly targeting high-ranking military officials and key components of Iran’s nuclear program. The Israeli military stated that the strikes were met with immediate retaliation, including an attack involving over 100 drones, with iran claiming it was only the initial phase of their response.
At approximately 3 AM, explosions reverberated across Tehran, with reports concentrated in the central, northeastern, and northwestern parts of the capital. According to the Israeli military, the assault involved roughly 200 warplanes striking over 100 locations, including nuclear facilities, ballistic missile production sites, and other military zones in areas such as Natanz, Kermanshah, and Tabriz.
These attacks mark a critically important escalation in the long-standing tensions between Israel and Iran, heightening concerns about a potential regional conflict that could draw the U.S. into another middle Eastern war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a video address, “This operation will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat.”
“this is a clear and present danger to Israel’s very survival.”
The Israeli strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian military leaders. Iranian media confirmed the deaths of Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the Iranian armed forces‘ chief of staff; Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; and Maj. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, an IRGC commander. Veteran nuclear scientists Fereydoon Abbasi, Abdolhamid Minoucher and Mohammad-Mehdi tehranchi were also killed, according to press TV.
Iranian state media reported that residential areas in Tehran were also hit, resulting in civilian casualties, including children. The exact number of deaths remains unclear, but one resident reported the loss of relatives.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah ali Khamenei condemned the attacks, stating that Israel extended its “filthy and bloodstained hand to commit a crime in our beloved country.”
“With this crime, the Zionist regime has prepared a bitter and painful fate for itself – and it will undoubtedly face it,” he said, according to a statement released to local media.
Social media videos showed fires and structural damage to residential buildings in Tehran, believed to be the residences of officials targeted in the strikes.
Ali, a resident living near one of the targeted locations, recounted hearing loud explosions while praying.
“The floor started shaking, so I stopped praying and ran outside,” he said. He found smoke emanating from a building, with people shouting in the street.
The attacks and subsequent retaliation led to widespread airspace closures and flight cancellations across the region. Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel suspended all flights, while Emirates Airlines canceled flights to Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon.
As Iranian drones approached Israel, Jordan issued warnings for citizens to stay indoors. Sirens were later activated in Amman.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Israel’s attacks “as a unilateral action” that Israal believed was “necessary for its self-defense,” seeking to distance the U.S.from the operation.
“We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,” Rubio said according to a statement released by the White House.
“President Trump and the Governance have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and remain in close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel.”
U.S. embassies in the region have implemented movement restrictions, with some evacuating non-essential personnel.
President Trump stated hours before the strikes that he did not want Israel to attack so as not to impact negotiations.
“I don’t want them going in because, I mean, that would blow it,” he said. The future of these negotiations remains uncertain.
Israel’s operation has drawn condemnation from several regional countries. Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry denounced the “heinous Israeli attacks against the brotherly islamic Republic of Iran.”
Oman described the attacks as “unacceptable and ongoing aggressive behaviour that undermines the foundations of stability in the region,” according to a statement by the country’s foreign ministry.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for “maximum restraint” to prevent “descent into deeper conflict.”
“This is a clear and present danger to Israel’s very survival.”
