Explosions have been reported in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
The New York Times writes that US attacks against Iran are on the way.
Iranian media also report that three explosions were heard in the capital. A large cloud of smoke has risen in the center of Tehran. According to the Iranian news agency Fars, missiles have hit the Jomhouri area in Tehran.
There have also been reports of two further explosions north of the capital.
A witness told Reuters that people were running in panic.

As a result of the attack, Israel has asked the population to work from home and closed schools. They have banned public gatherings. Airports and airspace are also closed.
The extent of the attack is currently unclear. It is also unclear whether Israel is doing this on its own, or in cooperation with the United States.
Trump has recently sent large forces to the Middle East and has repeatedly threatened to use military force against Iran if the country does not agree to a new nuclear agreement.
During the 12-day war in June 2025, it was Israel that first attacked Iran, before the US bombed three nuclear facilities in the country.

The attack on Israel comes at the same time that the US has the largest military air force in the Middle East in two decades.
Not since the invasion of Iraq in 2003 have the Americans sent more fighter jets to the region. At the same time, some of America’s most important warships are in position, and so are American soldiers.
In recent weeks, the US and Iran have been negotiating a new nuclear agreement. On Thursday, the parties met and the talks were described as good. New meetings were then planned.
On Saturday morning Norwegian time, Israel, America’s close ally, attacked.
The US and Trump have demanded that Iran shut down its nuclear program and get rid of its long-range missiles. Iran has refused to fully agree to that.
According to The New York Times, the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, sent out an email to his staff at the embassy in Jerusalem just hours before the situation escalated. The message was crystal clear: Those who want to leave the country “should do so TODAY”.
Before the war was a fact, VG spoke to a resident of the capital Tehran. She described how several people also hoped that an attack would come, and others who feared what would happen.
– We have reached a point where all the alternatives are bad, she said, describing a city and a country that had completely lost hope.
Relations between the United States and Iran
The relationship between the US and Iran broke down after the revolution in 1979 and has since been characterized by sanctions and deep mistrust. The nuclear issue has dominated the past decades: Iran reached an agreement with the US and other major powers in 2015, but US President Donald Trump withdrew in 2018 and reimposed sanctions.
At the same time, the rivalry between Iran and Israel has intensified. Israel sees Iran’s nuclear program as an existential threat, and Iranian-backed groups have put pressure on Israel for years, but have weakened after the war that followed the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
In June 2025, a twelve-day long direct war broke out between Iran and Israel. The US sided with Israel and attacked Iranian nuclear facilities. Hundreds of Iranian civilians were killed.
