World Franchise Day Spotlights Local Business Owners
Table of Contents
Franchise leaders worldwide are observing the first annual World Franchise Day, an initiative designed to highlight franchising’s economic importance and the entrepreneurs behind the brands.
The concept originated with Sherry McNeil, president and CEO of the Canadian Franchise Association. “I woke up at 3 a.m. and I thought, Oh my gosh, why don’t we have some sort of franchise day? There’s a national chocolate cake day, a national potato chip day, etc. So I started to do some research, and I couldn’t find anything on Google about an actual celebration of franchising.”
McNeil collaborated with Kirk Allen, co-founder of reshift Media, and the World Franchise Council (representing over 40 nations) to establish World Franchise day, celebrated annually on June 11th and subsequently on the second Wednesday of June. The aim is to recognize franchisees as small business owners.
“People often think franchising is just big business,” McNeil says. “But franchisees are your neighbors. They hire locally, pay local taxes and support their communities. They are the definition of shopping local.”
Franchising is growing into diverse sectors like mobile dog grooming, home services, and fitness studios. According to the Canadian Franchise Association, it includes over 660 distinct business categories, extending beyond fast food and retail. Franchise service providers and consultants are also expanding, offering bundled services like digital marketing, PR, and led generation.
For potential franchisees, McNeil and Allen emphasize due diligence, which means understanding startup costs, lifestyle changes, and aligning with ethical brands. “Look for the logo,” mcneil says, referring to organizations like the CFA and International Franchise Association, which vet members.
The hope is that World Franchise Day will be both a celebration and a call to action. “Every franchise brand should do something – put a poster in the window, share a franchisee’s story, give away a coffee,” Allen says. “As franchising deserves to be recognized globally.”
Franchise Opportunities and Growth
The franchise industry continues to evolve, offering diverse opportunities for entrepreneurs. Understanding the dynamics of this sector is crucial for both franchisors and franchisees.
“Every franchise brand should do something… Because franchising deserves to be recognized globally.”
