Hundreds of Cubans and other Latino residents in Florida may soon see some financial relief as state legislators have approved a budget that includes the permanent elimination of sales tax on essential hurricane supplies.
According to Spectrum News, the approved budget of 115 billion dollars includes a key change: Emergency articles such as batteries, portable generators, waterproof sheets and petrol tanks of five gallons or less will be free from taxes throughout the year. The decision now rests with Governor Ron Desantis.
Previously,Florida residents could only benefit from tax exemptions during two short periods each year.The new measure aims to alleviate the stress of deadlines and the burden of high living costs, allowing families to prepare calmly and proactively.
“We should have the tax free all year round,” insists Irma Bosquez, a resident of Hillsborough county, while shopping for batteries. “This will probably make people get ready in advance and do not wait.”
Many Cuban families are still recovering from previous hurricanes, with reconstruction being a slow and expensive process.This measure would not only reduce expenses but also ease the uncertainty of being unprepared when the next storm hits.

The season of hurricanes officially began on June 1st, with predictions of 15 tropical storms and at least eight possible hurricanes, according to the Institute of Meteorology of Cuba (Insmet).
The colorado State University predicts an even more active season, with 17 storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 of great intensity.
