Through the analysis of data from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and other ground-based telescopes, scientists determined that this black hole possesses a mass 33 times greater than that of the Sun. It is known that massive stars undergo collapse and transform into black holes, with those in the Milky Way typically being around ten times the mass of the Sun.
What sets this discovery apart is the sheer magnitude of this celestial entity. Even compared to Cygnus X-1, the previously known most massive black hole in our galaxy with a mass of 21 solar masses, this newly found black hole is significantly larger.
Proximity to Earth
Remarkably, this colossal black hole is situated in the constellation Aquila, a mere 2000 light-years away from Earth.
