Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that it is not possible to talk about an international system that prevents injustice in light of Israel dropping 14 times more bombs on the Gaza Strip than those dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
This came in a speech he delivered today, Tuesday, during his participation in the 16th Turkish Ambassadors Conference in the capital, Ankara. Erdogan stated that the first half of the last century witnessed two world wars that claimed the lives of millions of people, and that the Holocaust at that stage constituted a blatant example of brutality and barbarism, and left deep traces in the collective memory of humanity.
The Turkish President said that the existing international system that protects the powerful and suppresses the oppressed has produced instability, crises, and injustice for decades.
He added, “More than 70,000 Palestinians were killed in Gaza, and more than 170,000 others were injured, and no one knows how many bodies are under the rubble.” He pointed out that there are many husbands and children currently searching for their mothers, fathers, and husbands, or waiting for news of their fate.
He said, “Today, tens of thousands of children who lost their mothers, fathers, siblings, homes and schools are trying to cling to life amid the rubble in Gaza. They are living witnesses to genocide.”
He pointed out that the population of the Gaza Strip was about 2.3 million people before the genocide, pointing out that the Israeli army dropped more than 200 thousand tons of bombs on this residential area.
He explained that Israel leveled Gaza with bombs 14 times greater than those dropped on Hiroshima.
Without soul or feeling
He denounced, “In light of this situation, how can we talk about an international system that works and produces solutions to these problems and prevents injustice? How can we trust the current structure of global security and governance?”
Erdogan stressed, “When looking at the complete picture, the scene we face is as follows: Most international institutions today appear as if they are dead; without spirit, without feeling, without movement, and without effectiveness.”
He stressed that the process that was launched after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York culminated in reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip on October 10.
The Turkish President pointed out that despite the increasing violations by Israel, the restraint shown by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) contributed to maintaining the ceasefire to a large extent.
He stressed that humanitarian aid shipments will continue little by little despite the various restrictions, adding, “We also show our excellence through our humanitarian aid, which exceeded 103 thousand tons.”
He explained, “At this stage, our priority remains to ensure the continuity of the ceasefire and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.” Erdogan stressed the need to begin the reconstruction of Gaza as soon as possible, pointing out that Ankara continues to communicate intensively in this regard.
Over the course of two years, on October 8, 2023, Israel began a war of annihilation against Gaza that left more than 70,000 Palestinians dead and more than 171,000 wounded. It ended with a ceasefire agreement that entered into force on October 10, which it violated hundreds of times.
