The Congolese army says it has taken control of the town of Uvira in eastern Congo after the withdrawal of the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23. In a statement on Monday night, the army condemned M23’s “systematic looting” of the city. M23 took control of the city in December, shortly after Congo and Rwanda signed a peace agreement in Washington with US President Donald Trump in attendance. The US has asked the rebel group to withdraw from the city, which is located at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, close to the border with Burundi. (NTB)
