The San Jose Sharks agreed to a two-year contract extension with 25-year-old forward Ty Dellandrea on Friday. In addition, the Californian team recalled goalkeeper Laurent Brossoit in order to replace the injured Yaroslav Askarov.
Acquired from Dallas on June 19, 2024 in exchange for a fourth-round pick, Dellandrea is in his second season with the Sharks. Since the start of this campaign, he has scored 11 points in 42 games. Pocketing $1.3M this season, he will see his salary increase during his new agreement, which is valued annually on average at $1.625M. He will be an uncompensated free agent at the deadline in the summer of 2028. Cumulatively, he has recorded 61 points in 261 games in the NHL.
For his part, Brossoit has come a long way. He signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 2024, but knee and hip injuries meant he never played for the Illinois team. After getting the green light from doctors this season, he was traded to the Sharks on January 8. In 14 games with the latter’s AHL farm club, he posted an impressive 11-2-1 record and a 91.5% save percentage. He will replace Askarov, who suffered a lower body injury during his team’s training yesterday morning. He will have to be gone for a while.
All in all, we can assume that the Sharks will send Alex Nedeljkovic into the fray tomorrow against the Canadian at the Bell Centre. However, Brossoit could be sent into action, which would mean that he would play his first game in the Bettman circuit since the 2023-24 season. Will he be able to do well at the end of the season in order to make a permanent return to the NHL next season?
