Philippines Invests P3 Billion to Extend Agricultural Shelf Life with Sustainable Cold Storage

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is setting a new standard in agricultural logistics with a substantial investment in cold storage facilities. This initiative comes as a strategic move to enhance the shelf life of fresh produce, ensure consistent supply, and stabilize prices.

The DA will allocate P3 billion for the development of 99 cold storage facilities throughout the country. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has approved the allocation of P1.5 billion from unprogrammed funds for the construction of these cold storage units, with another P1.5 billion coming from the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

This dual funding approach will facilitate the construction of 65 small or modular chiller-type cold storage facilities across the nation, alongside a larger facility set to be built in Camarines Sur. Additionally, plans are in place for two more large-scale facilities in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, and Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, along with 31 modular units distributed nationwide.

Operational Timelines

Most of the smaller, modular cold storage facilities will come online in the current year. In contrast, construction for the larger units is expected to take between 18 to 22 months. These large-scale facilities will each accommodate between 2,800 to 3,500 pallets, depending on the products they store.

The modular refrigerated warehouses, resembling 40-foot container vans, will have storage capacities ranging from 7 to 15 metric tons and will be operational after a three-month construction period.
