Colombian Presidential Hopeful Miguel Uribe Shows Betterment After Shooting

After being shot in Bogota, presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is showing positive signs, though he remains in critical condition.

The 39-year-old senator was attacked while campaigning last weekend, raising fears of a return to politically motivated violence in Colombia.

BOGOTA – Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is showing signs of neurological improvement after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds sustained during a campaign event in Bogota. He was shot twice in the head last weekend.

A statement from the Santa FE clinic, reported by AFP on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, indicated that “there are signs of neurological improvement” and “evidence of stabilization of blood flow.” Despite these positive developments, Uribe remains in critical condition. This is the first report on the improvement of his condition since the June 7 attack.

His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, stated on Tuesday that her husband was still “struggling for her life.”

Uribe,a conservative senator,was shot twice in the head and once in the foot by a 15-year-old suspect while campaigning in a park last Saturday. The alleged shooter claimed to be “innocent” and is currently detained in a juvenile detention center. The government believes the suspect is a hired killer, but the mastermind remains unknown.

Uribe, a member of the former Democratic Central Party of Alvaro Uribe (no family relationship), announced his presidential bid for the May 2026 election last October.A vocal critic of President Gustavo petro, he was considered a strong contender for his party’s nomination.

Uribe is the son of Diana Turbay,a journalist who was killed after being kidnapped by the Medellin cartel led by Pablo Escobar,and Cucu Julio Cesar Turbay,who served as President of Colombia from 1978 to 1982.

“There are signs of neurological improvement,” Santa FE clinic said in a statement.
