Up 8.3% in September compared to the same period last year, Chinese exports are better than expected according to Customs data published Monday. This, while Donald Trump threatens to resume the bilateral trade war.
The forecasts of economists surveyed by the Bloomberg agency concerning the foreign trade of the second largest economy in the world were counting on an increase of 6.6%.
For their part, Chinese imports increased by 7.4% last month year-on-year, according to Customs. Here again, this is a result significantly higher than what Bloomberg analysts expected (+1.9%).
New strategy
This increase in almost all regions of the world demonstrates a change in China’s commercial strategy. Over the first six months of 2025, its exports to Europe increased by almost 7% year-on-year. These proportions are also increasing for Latin America, Asia Pacific, India and Africa.
Proof that China has been able to adapt to American taxes, but the uncertainties have not yet been resolved.
Donald Trump announced Friday on his Truth Social network that the United States would impose additional 100% customs duties on Chinese goods, in addition to those already in force, from November 1 “or before.”

Drop in exports to the United States
Despite this further deterioration in bilateral trade relations, Chinese exports to the United States increased by 8.6% in September compared to August, again according to figures from Chinese Customs. China exported $34.3 billion worth of goods there last month.
But over the year, exports to this country fell: the country led by Donald Trump only represents around 10% – compared to 15% in 2024.
