Lajur.co, Kendari – Have you ever woke up a child in the middle of the night to breastfeed or take to the toilet? It is better to stop the habit, especially between 23.00-02.00 because it can interfere with the growth of children.
Pediatrician at Tzu Chi Hospital, Ian Suryadi Setja said that time was the golden period of growth hormone in children. Hormone production requirements are that children must be completely in a sound sleep condition.
“If at 11 pm to 2 am the child is awakened, even just kissed, the production of growth hormone can go down,” explained Ian in the media discussion “Today’s generation and milk children, guidelines for parents” held in the Semanggi area, Jakarta, Monday (2/6).
The production of growth hormone, he said, would only be optimal if the child had entered the deep sleep phase, which is usually only reached about two hours after starting to sleep.
Growth hormone or growth hormone is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. This hormone plays a big role in the growth and development of children, especially in:
- increasing the body’s height;
- improve body tissue and cells;
- balance metabolism; And
- Regulate muscle mass and body fat.
Interestingly, this hormone is produced most when a child is sleeping inside or soundly at night, not when awake. Therefore, waking children in crucial times can interfere with this important process.
One of the general habits of parents is to wake children to be given midnight milk. But according to Ian, this can actually have a bad impact if done between 23.00-02.00.
“At that hour it should not be given anything, including milk or milk. Because it can interfere with the work of hormones that are active,” he explained.
If the child wakes up alone accidentally then, as much as possible avoid further stimulus. Let him go back to sleep without much interaction so that the growth hormone can still work.
In addition, parents are encouraged to build a healthy night routine. Ideally, the child has started sleeping at 21:00. That way, the body can enter the sleep phase in time and the production of growth hormones is running optimally.
“The latest dinner at 6 pm, then drink milk at 8. After that, get ready to sleep. Do not pass from 9 pm if you can,” said Ian. ADM
