Wildlife Smuggling Attempts Thwarted at US-Mexico Border: Parrots and Chickens Seized

Border Patrol Intercepts Two Separate Smuggling Operations

U.S. Customs and Border protection (CBP) officers at the Otay Mesa and San Ysidro ports of entry recently intercepted two separate attempts to smuggle live animals into the United States. The incidents, occurring within days of each other, highlight the ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking across the border.

Parrots Hidden in Boots: Otay Mesa Incident

On April 30th, at approximately 11:29 AM, CBP officers at the Otay Mesa port of entry encountered a 51-year-old man driving a 2017 SUV seeking entry from Mexico. During a routine inspection, the driver was referred to secondary inspection for a more thorough examination.

While conducting the secondary inspection, a CBP officer noticed unusual bulges around the driver’s ankles. A pat-down revealed six live, undeclared parrots concealed inside the man’s boots. Further inspection of the vehicle uncovered an additional six parrots hidden near the front passenger seat, tragically, two of which were found deceased. The driver was immediately taken into custody.

The illegal wildlife trade poses a significant threat to biodiversity and conservation efforts worldwide.

Chickens and Parakeets Discovered in Trunk at san Ysidro

Just days later, on May 4th at 11:32 PM, a similar incident unfolded at the San Ysidro port of entry. A 26-year-old man driving a 2015 SUV requested entry into the U.S. from mexico. CBP officers directed the vehicle, along with its driver and passengers, to secondary inspection.

During the secondary inspection, officers noticed a blanket in the vehicle’s trunk. Upon closer inspection, they observed movement beneath the blanket, revealing two cages. One cage contained 16 live parakeets, while the other held three live chickens. The driver and passengers were promptly arrested and taken to a secure location for processing.

Combating Wildlife Trafficking: A Growing concern

These incidents underscore the persistent challenge of wildlife smuggling at the U.S.-Mexico border. According to recent data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, wildlife trafficking is a multi-billion dollar industry that threatens countless species worldwide. The CBP plays a crucial role in intercepting these illegal shipments and protecting vulnerable animal populations.

The seized animals are typically turned over to the U.S. fish and Wildlife service for proper care and placement. The individuals involved in these smuggling attempts face potential criminal charges and penalties.
