Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez‘s upcoming wedding in Venice is proving to be more elaborate than the average destination wedding. The couple is grappling with logistical nightmares and local resentment as they prepare to tie the knot.

While some local businesses are contributing to the festivities, such as providing handcrafted glassware and pastries for wedding favors, the event has also stirred public discontent. Details of the wedding have been closely guarded since invitations were sent out in March, but some challenges have surfaced publicly.

Marta Sottoriva, a teacher and activist in Venice, described the wedding as “the symbol of all that is wrong with Venice.”

“Every time an event of this kind happens, the city comes to a standstill…and even more tourists arrive.”

sottoriva told the guardian that “There’s a lot of anger in the air because once again the council has enslaved itself to the logic of profit – our city has been sold to the highest bidder,” adding that large events disrupt the city and exacerbate overtourism, a growing concern for Venice, similar to issues faced by other popular destinations like the Louvre.

A protest banner reading “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX,” was quickly removed by local police, according to the Associated Press.

“Its absurd to treat this city like it’s Disneyland,” said Grazia Satta, a retired teacher and social worker, according to the Wall Street Journal. “The message this wedding sends is that rich people can do whatever they want. We shouldn’t kneel before wealth like this.”

Bezos’ security team is reportedly making last-minute adjustments to wedding plans to evade activists, according to TMZ. Water-taxi companies are also being kept uninformed, raising questions about who is truly in the know.

One solution could be for Bezos to utilize Amazon’s delivery service to discreetly transport himself and his bride to the reception, even though a human-sized Amazon box might attract unwanted attention.

Yacht Logistics and Airspace Restrictions

The logistics of accommodating large yachts in Venice are also proving challenging. While yachts don’t “park,” the largest ones face limitations on where they can anchor.

One theory suggests that Bezos and Sánchez might exchange vows on his 417-foot yacht,the Koru,where he proposed to her two years ago. However, plans to dock the yacht in a lagoon may have been altered due to potential safety concerns related to protests.

The Koru is not the only significant yacht in the area. Venice has nine “yacht ports,” all of which are fully booked for the wedding week. TMZ reports that other billionaire yacht owners are changing their travel plans to avoid the congestion.

Despite airspace restrictions over Venice, CNN reports that private helicopters are being permitted, potentially for heads of state attending the event.

Gondolas, however, will not be part of the festivities. One gondolier told the WSJ that they are “too slow.”

President Trump has reportedly received an invitation to the wedding, though it is indeed unclear if Melania received a plus-one. His attendance is uncertain due to pressing world events.
