Derby Day Disrupted: Vehicle Incident Causes Mass Injuries

What was meant to be a party of football turned into a scene of chaos and panic just before the highly anticipated Barcelona derby between Espanyol and FC Barcelona. Nineteen individuals sustained injuries when a vehicle drove into a crowd of fans near Espanyol’s stadium in cornellà de Llobregat. The incident led to a brief interruption of the match and sparked fears of a deliberate attack.

The Incident unfolds: Pressure and Reaction

According to Commissioner Eduard Sallent of the Catalan police force, Mossos d’Estquadra, the vehicle had initially stopped amidst a large gathering of supporters. The driver, reportedly feeling pressured by the surrounding crowd, attempted to leave the area, resulting in the vehicle accelerating into the throng of people. Social media footage captured the event, showing fans surrounding and pushing the white car before it sped off, striking several individuals.

Inquiry Reveals Negligence, Not Malice

Authorities have stated that the incident does not appear to be a deliberate act. Tests for alcohol and drugs came back negative. The driver, a 45-year-old woman with no prior criminal record, was taken into custody on charges of negligent bodily harm and reckless driving. This contrasts sharply with recent trends; according to a 2024 report by the National highway Traffic Safety Management (NHTSA), incidents of intentional vehicle-ramming attacks have risen by 15% in major European cities over the past five years, making the initial uncertainty surrounding the barcelona event all the more alarming.

The driver had “felt pressured” and drove into the crowd when trying to leave the place.

FC Barcelona ultimately secured a 2-0 victory, clinching the championship title under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick. Despite the earlier disruption, post-match celebrations proceeded as planned.
