Badminton world association signals openness-but the hurdles are high.

After controversial decisions at the World Cup in Paris, the pressure on the Badminton World Association (BWF) is growing to use technical aids beyond the previous line control (“Hawk-Eye”). Several top players are asking to have controversial scenes checked for video in the future – similar to football.

Thomas Lund, General Secretary of the BWF, was open to the Danish broadcaster TV2, but at the same time dampened expectations. “We want to support the referees as much as possible so that they make the right decisions. But the focus is still on line and impact decisions,” said Lund. Situations such as network touches or a ball contact with clothing are delicate, but would be too rare to justify the use of comprehensive technology.

The challenge system has already been established for line balls: two objections per set are entitled to the players, successful corrections are retained. This option should be available on all courts in the future – so far only the television places have benefited. The surcharge has also been discussing for years whether laser could replace the work of the referee. The ball may be hit at most at an altitude of 115 centimeters, a measure that repeatedly triggers disputes, especially in doubles.

Lund does not consider a comprehensive video evidence to be realistic. “Technology cannot be introduced overnight. The time question plays a crucial role. We have learned from other sports that decisions with Var sometimes take a long time. We also have to take this into account,” emphasized the Secretary General. Nevertheless, he announced that he continues to pursue the topic: “It remains an important future topic for us.”

The next innovation is a “Time Clock” in the badminton – a measure that should accelerate the game. Badzine.de reported.
