manchester United’s Transfer Hopes Dashed as Arsenal Eyes Viktor Gyokeres

A onc-promising transfer for Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of collapse, possibly paving the way for Arsenal to secure the sought-after striker.

The arrival of Ruben Amorim had initially raised expectations at Man Utd, but the club’s performance has as deteriorated. Their failure to qualify for European football has further strained their finances.

Man Utd is expected to undergo a significant squad overhaul, with players like Jadon Sancho, Antony, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo potentially departing. These sales aim to generate funds for new acquisitions, with Matheus Cunha reportedly set to join after Man Utd agreed to pay his £62.5m release clause to Wolves in installments.

Cunha is expected to play behind the striker in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.Initial plans involved reuniting Amorim with Viktor Gyokeres, whom he transformed into a prolific goal scorer at Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres has scored 53 goals in 51 appearances, leading Sporting to a domestic double.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Gyokeres will leave Sporting this summer for less than his €100m release clause. A verbal agreement between the player, his agents, and Sporting’s management means bids of around €65m could seal the deal.

Despite Man Utd’s interest,Florian Plettenberg of Sky germany reports that the transfer is unlikely. He posted on X: “Understand that a move for Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United is now almost off the table!

“It is currently not the player’s objective either. Rather, Man Utd are now signing Matheus Cunha.”

Man Utd’s financial difficulties and lack of Champions League football are believed to be the primary reasons for the collapse of the Gyokeres deal.

Arsenal Could Capitalize

Gyokeres is still expected to move this summer, potentially joining Arsenal. Mikel Arteta hopes the 26-year-old striker will be the missing piece to transform the Gunners into title contenders.

Plettenberg previously noted that Arsenal’s striker search has narrowed to Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Arsenal’s sporting director, andrea Berta, favors gyokeres.

Arteta’s preferred choice remains Alexander Isak. However, Newcastle’s Champions League qualification makes it arduous to sign Isak. Consequently, Arsenal has shifted its focus to Sesko and Gyokeres, potentially reuniting Gyokeres with Amorim, this time in an arsenal jersey.
