BERLIN – Germany on Wednesday became the first European country to deploy Arrow air defense system in an effort to fight what it sees as a growing threat from Russia. The Arrow system is claimed to be designed to intercept hypersonic missiles such as Moscow’s Oreshnik.

The defense system, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in collaboration with the United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA), is used as the top layer of Israel’s air defense, along with Iron Dome—which counters the threat of short-range weapons.

“Who could have imagined that just 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the Jewish state, through the technology it developed, would help defend not only Germany but all of Europe,” said Israel’s Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, as quoted by Reuters, Thursday (4/12/2025).

According to IAI, a number of countries have expressed interest in purchasing the technology since the Arrow system helped thwart Iranian missile attacks on Israel in April and October 2024.
