Affected employees have been given a 30-day period to decide whether to comply with the relocation order. Those who choose to move must initiate the process within 60 days. Employees who decline the relocation will be considered to have resigned and will not be eligible for severance compensation.

This relocation mandate represents a further tightening of AmazonS return-to-office policy, which has evolved over the past two years. initially, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon permitted employees to work remotely. However,in May 2023,the company began requiring employees to work from the office at least three days per week. in January of this year, Amazon fully eliminated remote work options, mandating a five-day in-office work week.

Even with the five-day in-office requirement, employees who lived far from major hubs were previously allowed to work from satellite offices in cities like New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. The current mandate, however, requires employees to be based in the same location as their managers and team members.
