The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake had a depth of 28 kilometers near Mazar-e-Sharif, which has a population of around 523 thousand inhabitants.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health says that at least 20 people died and around 320 were injured.
However, the number of victims may increase as rescue teams reach remote villages in the hardest-hit provinces of Balkh and Samangan.

Also several buildings were damagedincluding the historic Blue Mosque of Mazar-e-Sharif, one of the largest cities in Afghanistan.

The France-Presse agency reports that pieces of the Blue Mosqueparticularly from one of its minarets, fell to the ground.

The historic Blue Mosque was built in the 15th century and is one of the holiest sites in Afghanistan.

It is believed to be the place where the prophet Muhammad’s son-in-law is buried.
The earthquake occurred near the border between Afghanistan and Uzbekistanbut it was also felt further south, in the Afghan capital, Obscene.
Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakesas it is located on two active faults.
In August, more than 2,200 people died and thousands were injured following an earthquake and strong aftershocks in southeastern Afghanistan.
