New rules for calculating pensions for “June pensioners“
Table of Contents
From January 1, 2026, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will start recalculating pensions for people who retired in June in 2009-2019. The new regulations are to correct earlier, unfavorable rules for this group, which led to the underestimation of benefits. The change affects about 100,000 people.
Why were pensions lower?
Until now, ZUS, calculating pensions for persons switching to benefit in June, omitted the quarterly indicators of the valorization of contributions from the first quarter of the year. Instead, only an annual indicator was used, which resulted in lower payments compared to people retiring in other months.
What will change from 2026?
The new act changes the method of calculating benefits. From 2026, the basis will be the sum of both annual and quarterly valorisation indicators. ZUS will automatically calculate pensions without having to submit additional applications.
What will the benefits of pensioners be?
ZUS calculations show that the amount of benefits will increase. For example:
- A person who retired in June 2009 (and currently receives about PLN 3,250) can count on an increase of PLN 69 per month.
- A man who retired in June 2019 can gain an additional PLN 150 per month, which gives almost PLN 2,000 a year.
The changes will also include survivors’ pensions, which will be calculated on the basis of the hypothetical pension that the deceased would receive.

No equalization and the possibility of plowing claims
It is important that the new regulations do not provide for payment of equalization for earlier years. Additional money will only be paid from 2026. Some pensioners, citing the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal of 2023, which confirmed the violation of the principle of equal treatment, decided to claim their rights in court. Lawyers indicate that submitting a claim before entering into force new regulations may give a chance to obtain a compensation for the past.
