Researchers from Brazil and the United Kingdom meet this Monday and Tuesday, at Cais do Sertão, to discuss lessons and challenges left by the epidemic

Recife will host one of the largest scientific meetings in the world dedicated to the impacts of the Zika virus epidemic. On Monday (21) and Tuesday (22), the auditorium of the Cais do Sertão Museum will host the event “Response and preparation for the Zika epidemic: learning from the last decade for the future”, promoted by MERG (Research Group on the Microcephaly Epidemic) and the LIFE Zika project.
Participation is free and registrations can be made online on the Even3 website.
The meeting will bring together researchers from different parts of Brazil and the United Kingdom, as well as families, students, public managers and health professionals, with the aim of discussing the results of a decade of research into the effects of Zika.
“The event is a way of delivering to society what we have learned in ten years of research work and assistance to affected families”, explains infectious disease doctor Demócrito Miranda, member of MERG.
Among the topics under discussion are the permanent challenges faced by families of children with Congenital Zika Syndrome, the evaluation of responses to the epidemic and the definition of priorities for future public policies and scientific studies. The discussions range from epidemiological issues to scientific communication strategies, reflecting the extensive multidisciplinary monitoring work carried out since 2015.
As a result of this effort, the group will launch the Care Guide for Families Affected by the Zika Epidemic during the event, drawn up based on the experience accumulated over the last decade. The material will also be available for free download on the website www.mergzika.com.br
